Strong early literacy begins long before a child reads their first word. At Precious Smiles, we know that communication, language and oracy - talking, listening, and finding the confidence to express ideas, form the essential foundation on which reading and writing are built. Every day, our educators create a language-rich environment full of conversation, narrating, and modelling new vocabulary that give children the words they need to think, share and understand the world around them.
We nurture a genuine love of books and stories. Sharing books together, retelling favourite tales and losing themselves in role-play help children develop comprehension, imagination and a sense of how stories work. These activities are precursors to confident reading, phonics and early writing. As children grow, we support each of these skills at a pace that's right for the individual child.
We help children discover that maths is everywhere and something to enjoy. Through playful, hands-on experiences, children explore numbers, counting, subitising and early calculation. Children explore shapes, space, repeating patterns and learn to measure with a range of tools. Children learn skills in comparing, sorting, building and problem-solving as they play.
Just as with literacy, language is at the heart of maths too. We deliberately develop children's early mathematical language — words like more, fewer, heavier, taller, first and next - so that children can talk about and make sense of mathematical ideas, laying firm foundations for the learning ahead.
Across everything we do, we challenge children through creative, playful and purposeful activities that build confidence and a genuine love of learning - a positive attitude that stays with them well beyond their years with us.
